DESCRIPTION OF REQUEST: (state briefly why legislative action is requested)
Shaker Heritage Society (SHS) seeks to install ADA-accessible, seasonal restroom facilities in 1915 Shaker Barn to support our facility rental program and other onsite events. This project will support our ongoing efforts to facilitate universal access to this historic site, expand the recreation opportunities it affords, and enhance accessibility for our guests and visitors.
The proposed restroom facilities will be installed in a modest 480 square foot horse stall located within an interior addition of the 1915 Barn. These stalls were constructed after the period of Shaker occupancy, thus preserving the historic character and integrity of the building and minimizing any intrusions from the new construction. Construction and engineering documents are complete and approved by the State Historic Preservation Office and the utility connections have been reviewed and approved by the Town of Colonie.
Revenues from our hospitality program will be reinvested in a new facilities fund, as well as the direct care of our buildings, grounds, and associated personnel costs. serving our mission to preserve and interpret Shaker history at our site, and also greatly enhance the long-term financial stability and independence of our organization.
