Justification: (state briefly why legislative action is requested)

Shaker Heritage Society requests legislative authorization to apply for a Community Project Funding through the Office of Congressman Paul Tonko. The request in the amount of $1,480,000 was submitted March 17th, 2023.

Funds from this grant will be applied towards the cost of completing exterior stabilization and rehabilitation work on the 1858 Shaker Washhouse and full rehabilitation of the 1825 Shaker Ministry Workshop. In partnership with the Northeastern Woodworkers’ Association, SHS is currently exploring the feasibility of adapting the Washhouse into a new woodworking education facility. Exterior rehabilitation would be the first step in preparing the building for adaptive reuse. Rehabilitation of the Ministry Workshop would provide additional programming and interpretive space for SHS in the immediate term, and support the long-term goal of hiring a residential caretaker for the property.
