DESCRIPTION OF REQUEST: (state briefly why legislative action is requested)
The Public Defender’s Office, Alternate Public Defender’s Office, and Assigned Counsel Program request authorization to accept the following grant funds from the New York State Division of Criminal Justice Services (DCJS):
• Aid to Defense for Discovery Reform Program: $742,972 for April 1, 2026, through March 31, 2027
• Aid to Defense - Supplemental Program: $645,298 for April 1, 2026, through March 31, 2027
• Aid to Defense Program: $42,738 for April 1, 2026, through March 31, 2027
• Alternatives to Incarceration Program: $19,921 for July 1, 2026, through June 30, 2027
The $19,921 listed above is the Public Defender’s Office share of the $49,037 Alternatives to Incarceration block grant, which is shared with the County’s Department of Probation.
These recurring awards support criminal defense work performed by the County’s three indigent legal defense offices. No County matching funds are required.
Although most of the grant funding is anticipated in the County’s budget, we also request authorization for $22,061 in related amendments to the Public Defender’s Office and Alternate Public Defender’s Office 2026 budgets.
