DESCRIPTION OF REQUEST: (state briefly why legislative action is requested)
The Public Defender’s Office requests authorization for a six-month extension to the Fourth Upstate Quality Improvement and Case Reduction grant contract with the New York State Office of Indigent Legal Services. The grant’s original term of July 1, 2023 to June 30, 2026 would be extended through December 31, 2026 by this contract amendment.
Since there was a delay implementing work funded by the initial Upstate Quality Improvement and Caseload Reduction grant, the extension is needed to utilize the funds provided by the grant. The grant provides funding for a portion of the salary and fringe for a full-time attorney to reduce office-wide attorney caseloads, thereby increasing the quality of legal representation to clients.
