DESIGNATING ALBANY COUNTY AS A PURPLE HEART COUNTY

WHEREAS, It is the sense of the Albany County Legislature that the men and women who have served in our nation’s Armed Forces are worthy of recognition for their selfless service in defense of our Country and County, and
WHEREAS, Those men and women from Albany County that served in the Armed Forces, especially those wounded or killed in action while serving, deserve praise and honor from Albany County; and
WHEREAS, On August 7, 1782, General George Washington issued an order establishing the Badge of Military Merit to honor merit, particularly among the enlisted soldiers; and
WHEREAS, On February 22, 1932, the Badge of Military Merit was renamed the Purple Heart, which is awarded to any member of the United States Armed Forces wounded or killed in combat by a declared enemy of the United States; and
WHEREAS, Many Albany County residents answered the call to serve their Country and subsequently were wounded or killed during their service, earning the Purple Heart in recognition for their heroic sacrifice; and
WHEREAS, The Albany County Legislature appreciates the sacrifices of Albany County’s Purple Heart recipients made while defending our Country and believes they are worthy of special recognition and a sign of communal solidarity with them, now, therefore be it
RESOLVED, By the Albany County Legislature that Albany County is hereby declared to be a Purple Heart County in recognition of the selfless service of those who paid the price in defense of our Country, and, be it further
RESOLVED, That a copy of this resolution be forwarded to the Military Order of the Purple Heart and the Office of the Albany County Executive.
